About Us

Little City Montessori offers children two to six years old an integrated approach to Montessori education that enhances individualized exploration with structured physical activity.

Little City Montessori is licensed by the State Board of Private Academic Schools (PAS), which is a distinction earned after a panel review of the academic curriculum and teacher credentials. We are proud to offer a licensed Kindergarten program.

Our program continues children’s education throughout the day by giving them space, activities and physical instruction. With dedicated access to the Little City Activity Center, we believe it’s time to think outside the blocks—because when children are active throughout the day, they are more open to learning.

Little City Montessori is member of the American Montessori Society.

Primary and Elementary Program Coordinator

Amanda (she/her) brings extensive experience to Little City Montessori from her seventeen years in Montessori education.

Amanda attended Seton Montessori Institute in Chicago, Illinois for her AMS Early Childhood training, and immediately after, founded her own Montessori school in Indianapolis, Indiana.  From its establishment in 2010 until her relocation to Philadelphia, Amanda served as the Owner and Head of School while leading the classroom. The school is exemplary of Amanda’s vision and leadership, with a year round outdoor classroom and focus on family engagement.

Since moving to Philadelphia in 2017, Amanda has worn many hats throughout the local Montessori community. At different times, she has taken on the roles of Curriculum Director, Lead Teacher, and Kindergarten Specialist. In all of her roles, she has always had a knack for connecting people to the Montessori method, through staff training, parent education, and community events. Amanda is currently working toward her Montessori certification for lower elementary (grades 1-3) from the Princeton Center for Teacher Education. This year, she will be taking a step away from the classroom to join the administrative team, overseeing the three primary rooms at Little City and developing our highly anticipated Elementary Program!

Montessori has played a role in Amanda’s personal life as well. Her daughter, currently a student at Moore College of Art and Design here in Philadelphia, attended both public and private Montessori schools through the 8th grade. Amanda loves living in Fishtown with her two cats and her partner (who also attended public Montessori school!).

Founding Family

Little City Montessori was founded by the Kertsman family. After seeing their own children blossom in a Montessori environment, the two couples were inspired to start a different type of Montessori school in their own neighborhood. The dream was to combine the Montessori philosophy with a focus on movement. As working parents, they tried to juggle extracurricular activities after school or squeeze them into weekend mornings. Little City Activity Center was designed to provide those structured classes and year-round play space for students of the school — giving families back more quality time.

Julian and Tanya live in Northern Liberties and have three children. Steve and Kaitlin live in Fishtown with their three children.

“Our mother and grandmother were teachers who instilled in us the values of education and community from an early age. As immigrants growing up in this great country, we always dreamed of building something meaningful together. Little City is the culmination of those dreams.” - Julian and Steve
